Junior Match Play Pathway
At Millennium Tennis, we offer three stages of match play events designed to help children progress through their tennis competition journey in a fun and supportive environment.
Each stage allows players to build confidence, develop skills, and gain valuable match experience against players of a similar level.
🔴 Red Ball Match Play – 8 & Under The first step into competition Red Ball Match Play is the ideal starting point for young players beginning their match play journey. Matches are played on a mini court with a lower net using red balls, allowing children to rally more easily and develop confidence while learning how to compete. Players will learn: •How to start a point with a serve and return •Rallying and ball control •Movement, balance and coordination •Basic scoring and match play skills •Build confidence and friendships Coaches are present to assist players with scoring and encouragement, ensuring a fun and positive first competition experience.
🟠 Orange Ball Match Play – 10 & Under Developing match skills Orange Ball Match Play helps players build consistency and confidence in competitive situations. Matches are played on a three-quarter court using orange balls, allowing players to continue developing rally skills and match awareness. Players will develop: •Serve consistency. •Rally tolerance and control •Understanding of scoring and positioning •Point construction and movement. •Confidence competing against similar level players. Coaches will be available during the event to assist and guide players when needed.
🟢 Green Ball Match Play – 12 & Under Preparing for junior competition Green Ball Match Play is ideal for players who are preparing for or have recently started Association Junior Competition. Matches are played on a full-size court using green balls, helping players transition toward full competition tennis. Players will develop: •Serve and return consistency. •Rally tolerance and point construction. •Court positioning and tactical awareness •Movement and recovery skills •Confidence competing in match situations. These events provide players with valuable match experience in a supportive competitive environment.
⭐ Flexible Pathway
The age groups are a guide only, as every child develops at a different pace.
For example:
· A 9-year-old who is strong in Orange Ball may move up to Green Ball Match Play.
· A player who needs more confidence may benefit from playing in Red Ball for longer.
The most important goal is for children to feel confident, enjoy competing, and continue improving.
If you are unsure which stage is most suitable, please speak with your coach.
